The Duck Pond

We think we are pretty lucky round here with the various pubs that we have.

There is just about every type of establishment you could wish for - from drinking only pubs to places that describe themselves as pubs but are really restaurants. And in most of them the quality of the food is unbelievably good.

Whenever we are away, and we eat out we realise just how good our local pubs are - there really is a treat in store for you here.

There is a copy of "The Good Pub Guide" in Duck Pond View, but (roughly in order of distance from us) here are some of the ones we use regularly.

The Puss in Boots
Hazelwood

A drinkers pub, not much food just bar snacks at lunchtimes, and then not always. Usually busy, and only 400 yards away - walking distance. Warm and snug in the winter, and great on a summer evening.
The Railway
Cowers Lane

Recently reopened with new hosts so not much known. Any visit reports welcome. Previous good reports of the twice weekly carvery.
The Cross Keys
Turnditch
01773 550 263
Recently reopened with new hosts so not much known. Menu looks promising though. Now modern with flagged floors, so can get a bit noisy. Any visit reports welcome.
The Tiger Inn
Turnditch

Our local. A nice, friendly, busy little village pub with excellent food at very good prices. Booking recommended at busy times.
The Bluebell
Farnah Green

Run by the same people who run the Bear. Food excellent, but dining room can be a bit soulless. Bar better but usual modern flagged floors so can get noisy..

The Hanging Gate
Shottle Gate

A chain pub, but you wouldn't know unless you had been to another pub in the same chain. Food all day, usually good, but the menu doesn't change much.
The Talbot Hotel
Belper

Very good food with Italian leanings, (in a restaurant if you choose,) good beer, not quite as expensive as The Bluebell or the Black Swan.
The Bear
Alderwasley

Huge menu, good vegetarian selection, and all excellent. Good portions, not cheap, but very good value. In the Michelin Guide to Pubs and the Good Pub Guide.
The Black Swan
Idridgehay

Our top pick locally. Very friendly hosts, good quantities of possibly the best food in the area, but not cheap. Lunches are cheaper and quieter. A special place for a special occasion. Booking recommended for evenings.

The Barley Mow
Kirk Ireton

Something very special. No food, probably not changed much since the middle ages, and with a limited choice of well kept beers, but well worth a visit, if only for a pre-dinner drink.
The Coach and Horses
Fenny Bentley

A very busy little pub on the Ashbourne/Buxton road. Excellent menu, great for Sunday lunch. Some time since we were tyere though.
The Red Lion
Hognaston

Some time since we were here, but an excellent menu, extensive and with some unusual items, but it can get a bit pricey - go for the early doors menu. (Michelin "Eating Out in Pubs")
